We read in Revelation 10:1, “And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire.” This mighty angel radiates heavenly glory. The angel's entire appearance shows that he is close to God. Let us explore the description of this angel. We first read that he is “clothed with a cloud.” Clouds often symbolize God's glory and majesty, as seen in the appearance of the LORD at Mount Sinai and in the dedication of the temple under King Solomon. Next, we read, “a rainbow was upon his head.” We have already encountered the rainbow in Revelation, when we were allowed to look into the heavenly throne room and saw the throne and Him who sat on it. We then saw a rainbow around the throne (Revelation 4:4). The rainbow also often signifies God's glory and majesty, and we think of it as a sign of God's faithfulness. His Word is yes and amen, certain and unbreakable! The third detail is, “His face is like the sun.” The same description is given about Christ when He appeared to John in His heavenly glory in Revelation 1:16, “And his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.” Lastly, we read, “His feet as pillars of fire.” This can also be translated as "columns of fire." We think of the pillar of fire as a sign of God's presence during the journey through the desert. It also brings to mind the Lord Jesus, who, in His heavenly glory, has "And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace” (Revelation 1:15). Heavenly fire is both redeeming and judging—saving and punishing—because fire is purifying and cleansing. In short, what heavenly glory this angel radiates! In Him, God is very near. God does not abandon His church in the end times, no matter how difficult and hard it may be, and no matter how long His deliverance and return may seem to us.
